Bill Weld: Trump has 'lost the capacity to govern'
Former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld (R) said Wednesday that President Trump has "lost the capacity to govern," a view he said was shared by White House staffers.

Weld pointed to instances of aides undermining the president and refusing to carry out his orders outlined in special counsel Robert Mueller's report on the Russia investigation.
“I think President Trump has lost the capacity to govern. The picture painted by volume two of the Mueller report is [of] someone who cannot be trusted, and all his own people know he can't be trusted," Weld said on CNN.

"And he can't even be obeyed when he gives a direct order. That's a picture of complete malfeasance and nonfeasance," he added.

Weld, who previously ran on the Libertarian Party's ticket for vice president in 2016, is the only announced challenger to Trump in the 2020 Republican Party primary so far.
In an interview Monday, he suggested that America would be "much better off" if Trump resigned and Vice President Pence became president.

Our Orlando Sentinel endorsement for president in 2020: Not Donald Trump
Donald Trump is in Orlando to announce the kickoff of his re-election campaign.

We’re here to announce our endorsement for president in 2020, or, at least, who we’re not endorsing: Donald Trump.

Some readers will wonder how we could possibly eliminate a candidate so far before an election, and before knowing the identity of his opponent.
Because there’s no point pretending we would ever recommend that readers vote for Trump.
After 2½ years we’ve seen enough.

“CRICKETS. THEY’RE GONE”: WHY THE MERCERS, TRUMP’S BIGGEST 2016 BACKERS, HAVE BAILED ON HIM
Robert Mercer is disillusioned. “Bob views all his political spending as a bad investment,” says a source close to Mercer. “This whole thing did not end up well for them,” says Sam Nunberg.

To judge from the recent leak of its internal poll numbers, Donald Trump’s 2020 campaign has a lot of ground to make up—and Trump family members have already been sounding alarms that Republican mega donors aren’t stepping up to close the gap. Don Jr. recently called a prominent donor and warned that Trump’s money haul is falling behind where Barack Obama was early in his reelection, while Jared Kushner has privately complained to RNC chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel that Trump’s war chest is not as big as it should be at this point in the cycle.

But a large part of the problem is that Trump has lost the financial support of one of his biggest backers in 2016: the Mercers. With their ties to Steve Bannon, Breitbart, and Cambridge Analytica, Robert Mercer and his daughter Rebekah were superstars last cycle. According to half a dozen sources familiar with the reclusive family’s political activities, the Mercers have drastically curtailed their political donations in recent months and will likely not play a significant role in 2020. “They think that the administration could do so much more. They’ve been very vocal about that to the president,” a person familiar with the Mercers’ thinking told me. “It’s like they’ve disappeared,” the former West Wing official added. “Crickets. They’re gone,” a prominent Republican strategist said.

Trump’s Sinister Assault on Truth
The president appears committed to destroying the very idea of facts.

Eventually, we all come to understand that words are the means by which we teach and inspire, defend truth, and seek justice. (Those of us of the Christian faith don’t consider it an accident that the first sentence in the Gospel of John is, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”) So words have extraordinary power—in our daily lives most of all, but in politics as well.

Democracy requires that we honor the culture of words. The very idea of democracy is based on the hope that fellow citizens can reason together and find a system for adjudicating differences and solving problems—all of which assumes there is a shared commitment to the integrity of our public words. If you believe words can ennoble, you must also believe they can debase. If they can elevate the human spirit, they can also pull it down. And when words are weaponized by our political leaders and used to paint all opponents as inherently evil, stupid, or weak, then democracy’s foundations are put in peril. Which brings us to the dismal, demoralizing Donald Trump era. ...

The debasement of words has reached a zenith with the coming of America’s 45th president, who dominates discourse in this country in ways perhaps no other president ever has. And if we hope to repair the damage that’s been done, we need to understand what it is about Trump’s misuse of words that is pernicious and dangerous.

The least problematic part is the sheer banality of Donald Trump’s words. During his presidency, Trump has uttered no beautiful and memorable phrases. His inaugural address, which is a speech normally meant to inspire the citizenry, is remembered, if at all, for the phrase American carnage and Trump’s description of a dystopian nation, broken and shattered. More worrisome is that many of Trump’s utterances are an incoherent word salad. If you read the transcript of many of his interviews and extemporaneous speeches, you often find that Trump is not only unable to lay out a coherent argument; at times he’s unable to string together sentences that parse. ....

....Trump is not simply a serial liar; he is attempting to murder the very idea of truth, which is even worse. “The point of modern propaganda isn’t only to misinform or push an agenda,” according to the Russian dissident and former world chess champion Garry Kasparov. “It is to exhaust your critical thinking, to annihilate truth.” ...

The MAGA Bomber is right: Donald Trump is "like a new found drug"
2020 Democrats, know this: Trumpism is not just about Donald Trump — it's an impenetrable authoritarian cult

The Democrats will likely lose the 2020 presidential election to Donald Trump. Why? Because the Democrats do not understand that Donald Trump represents an authoritarian movement and a cultural force. Trumpism is not merely or just a set of political policy preferences.

Like other authoritarian cultural movements Trumpism promises a national-cultural transformation, psychological uplift, group superiority, personal salvation, and a sense of membership and belonging in an exclusive community for its members and other supporters.

As a cultural force, Trumpism offers pleasure and joy for its followers and other members of the right-wing as Donald Trump gives permission to torment and commit violent and other harmful acts against "liberals", "progressives", "minorities", "immigrants", "Muslims", "the news media" and any other group which he as the leader and they as the followers deem to be "unAmerican" and not sufficiently "loyal" to the "cause" and "the movement".

The Trump-obsessed right-wing alleged terrorist, Cesar Sayok — the so-called "MAGA bomber" — is the human personification of Trump's right-wing cult of personality authoritarian movement.

Many millions of Trump's supporters share such thoughts and feelings.

GOP frets about Trump's poll numbers
As Trump kicks off reelection, his party worries he’s an anchor.

President Trump formally kicked off his re-election campaign Tuesday in front of thousands of fans at a boisterous rally in the heart of battleground Florida, even as top strategists in his own party worry that his weak political standing threatens the rest of the Republican ticket.

Trump reacted angrily last week to leaked internal surveys conducted by his own campaign that showed him trailing in virtually every swing state on the map. He fired several pollsters, and his campaign manager insisted that Trump’s numbers had improved.

Trump had to pay up front for his Orlando rally after stiffing 10 other cities
Orlando, where Trump kicked off his 2020 election bid, made sure they were paid in advance before Trump came to town.

Trump launched his 2020 bid Tuesday night, but it cost him.

Trump has stiffed at least 10 cities by refusing to pay local police forces for their time spent providing security and safety at his rallies. Because of that, Orlando, the site of his official 2020 campaign kickoff, demanded that he pay them up front.

Donald Trump’s reckless Iran policy casts doubt on the US as global leader
Washington’s European allies need to ask themselves whether the US government has become a dangerous liability

Irrespective of whether Iran is responsible for the recent attacks on Gulf shipping, the crisis now unfolding is fundamentally one manufactured out of thin air by the Trump administration. The implications go beyond the threat of a major war and consequent worldwide economic crash. Donald Trump’s reckless, incoherent Iran policy also throws into question the viability of the role of the United States as the global leader.

The US achieved its hegemonic status in the world system not simply through raw strength, but also by convincing the second-tier capitalist powers that it could manage that system in their interests as well as its own. Washington could be relied on to confront and put down challenges to the capitalist order, expand and deepen its reach, and handle crises as they arose. It was through responsible management of the system in the interests of western capital and state power more broadly (if not of humanity as a whole) that the US secured consent from its allies to lead this new form of empire.
