Trump is ‘prepping his base’ for a constitutional crisis to stop the Russia probe: Dem lawmaker
President Donald Trump is preparing his base for the constitutional crisis he’ll trigger by firing special counsel Robert Mueller, according to a congressional investigator.

Rep. Mike Quigley (D-IL), a member of the House Intelligence Committee, said the probe has gotten deep into sensitive financial areas involving Trump and his family, and he “impulsive” president was almost certain to fire the special counsel.
“The Mueller investigation could take at least another year, maybe two, but (the House) investigation is closer to its infancy than conclusion,” Quigley said Thursday, during a discussion at DePaul University College of Law. “In the meantime, we live with the very real threat that the Mueller investigation gets shut down.”

Quigley said the investigation, despite its complexity, had already revealed evidence of wrongdoing.
“If you had seen what I had seen you’d want me to go full throttle,” he said.
The lawmaker said he’s trying to communicate a sense of urgency, because he believes Trump is willing to risk democratic institutions and civil society to protect himself from the investigation.

Russia turns on Morgan Freeman over election 'war' video

The Rossiya 24 rolling news channel brought together a panel of psychiatrists, who attributed Morgan Freeman's performance to a Messianic complex resulting from playing God or the president in several films, not to mention "drug abuse".

The channel's eccentric weatherman Vadim Zavodchenkov also got in on the act, explaining that Mr Freeman was ill through "overwork and marijuana use".

TV Centre subjected the video to detailed analysis, concluding that it was the actor's "worst role".
He put his "deep, persuasive voice" to the service of an "establishment campaign to oust Trump", in which the video plays the part of "softening up public opinion," it said.

St Petersburg's Channel 5 warned Morgan Freeman that he had "lost millions of Russian fans in a moment" by turning into an "American propaganda loudspeaker" repeating "Russophobic cliches".
It surveyed the views of some Russian cinema stars, none of whom approved of Morgan Freeman's latest role.
Director Vladimir Bortko lamented a "remarkable artiste talking utter nonsense", and Andrei Konchalovsky mused that performers are "in general excitable buffoons, and easily led into propaganda".

The pro-Kremlin press also joined in. The popular tabloid Moskovsky Komsomolets headlined its story "Morgan Freeman's Fear and Loathing".

Journalist Mikhail Rostovsky also accused the actor of reacting emotionally, saying he was involved in a "highly aggressive and specific propaganda campaign against our country".

Condemnation of Morgan Freeman on Russian Twitter is blossoming with the English hashtag #StopMorganLie, in what social media analyst Eliot Higgins sees as a campaign by Russia's RT broadcaster.

Certainly, many of these tweets repeat formulas along the lines of "The Indians remember American democracy all too well, as they do in Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Iraq, Libya and Yugoslavia. Are you really proud of the democracy?" in English and Russian.

CNN poll: 54% say Russia-backed content on social media moved 2016 election
Although President Donald Trump insists otherwise, most Americans say it's likely that Russian-backed content on social media did affect the outcome of the 2016 election, according to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS.

The poll result comes on the heels of Facebook's announcement that it would turn over to Congressional investigators information related to more than 3,000 ads the company says were sold to accounts linked to a Russian troll farm between June 2015 and May 2017. And Senate Intelligence Chairman Richard Burr said he's planning to hold a public hearing next month on Russian election interference through Facebook and other social media platforms.

Russian Facebook Ads Contained Photos Stolen From Other Users
Facebook initially withheld from Congress the thousands of ads it says were purchased by Kremlin-affiliated trolls because some of them contain photos stolen from other Facebook users, a congressional staffer briefed on the content of the ads told TPM on Friday.

The staffer said some of the ads include images of people who are essentially innocent bystanders to the propaganda war Russia waged across social media platforms during the 2016 campaign. The staffer suggested it may be possible for Congress to redact the ads to maintain the privacy of any users whose photos were stolen, in order to give the public access to some of the material Russian operators deployed to try to illegally influence voters.

Are Trumpers Trying to Make Manafort Their Latest Fall Guy?
One of the recurrent features of the Russia investigation drama has been the Trump inner circle’s hunt for a fall guy. It’s a very weird progression because not only has the designated fall guy changed but the people in the inner circle have changed. Indeed, at some points, it’s been a member of the putative inner who was the designated fall guy.

... Now they seem to be on to Paul Manafort. We’re seeing Trump insiders raise the possibility that Manafort really did work with Russia and others threatening to go to war with Manafort if he turns against Trump....

What really got me thinking about this was this morning’s news that Sen. Chuck Grassley wants to ask the FBI whether they did or why they didn’t warn President Trump that some of his top advisors had ties to Russia. It’s possible this is just Grassley coming up with some nonsense on his own or following a June story from Circa. But I kind of doubt it. Put it together with the other fragments of evidence and it may be the start of an effort not only to protect Trump from the Russia scandal but to rebrand him as the prime victim of the plot rather than a participant.

Anxiety and fear casts shadow over new year for U.S. Jews
Rising anti-Semitism across the country has left the community fearful.

Wednesday evening marked the beginning of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year, and the first of the High Holy Days. But for Jews across the United States, the celebration has been marked as much by fear and precautions as it has by good tidings and well wishes — a sign that rising anti-Semitism and an alarming string of hate crimes have set American Jews on edge.

Since the election of President Donald Trump, violence against minorities has been on the rise across the country. Jews are among the most targeted groups, according to tracking done by ThinkProgress, the Southern Poverty Law Center, and a number of other publications and organizations. According to the Anti-Defamation League, or ADL, approximately 1,266 incidents of anti-Jewish violence were recorded in 2016. This year, that number is likely to rise — in April, an ADL report noted that 541 attacks against Jews had already been reported, an 86 percent increase over the same time period last year, numbers that reflect bomb threats, vandalism of Jewish cemeteries, and physical violence.

“There’s been a significant, sustained increase in anti-Semitic activity since the start of 2016 and what’s most concerning is the fact that the numbers have accelerated over the past five months,” ADL CEO Jonathan A. Greenblatt said at the time of the report.
