FAA limits flights to 3 major airports over shutdown staff shortage
The Federal Aviation Administration has begun to limit flights to New York City's LaGuardia Airport along with Newark and Philadelphia, citing staff shortages for air traffic controllers.
Why it matters: TSA and air traffic control workers are calling out sick at higher numbers than usual, since they're not being paid as a result of the partial government shutdown. Friday's delays are the first time air traffic control staffing has affected flights. Per Axios' Jonathan Swan, Republican members of leadership have been privately speculating that it would take an airport crisis to break the shutdown impasse.

Thousands of recalled IRS employees had not returned to work as of Tuesday
Thousands of IRS employees who have been called back to work during the government shutdown had not returned to work as of Tuesday, according to a House Democratic aide.
IRS staff briefed congressional committee staff on Thursday. According to the Democratic aide, the staff reported that in the IRS's Wage and Investment Division, which includes tax-return processing centers and call centers, about 26,000 employees were called back to work and only 12,000 of them were working as of Tuesday. Another 9,000 were not able to be reached, while 5,000 employees said they could not come back to work while the shutdown persisted because of hardships.

GOP senators read Pence riot act before shutdown votes
... One GOP senator said lawmakers told Pence “the shutdown needs to come to an end, this is not a strategy that works [and] we never should have had a shutdown in the first place.”
One of the most remarkable moments during the Senate luncheon came when McConnell told Pence that shuttering the government to try to secure funding for a border wall was not a smart approach.
“McConnell talked about how we need to bring this process to a close; we should never have had a shutdown; they don’t work; I’ve said this numerous times; I don’t know how many times I’ve told you there’s no education in the second kick of a mule,” said a GOP source familiar with the meeting.

Trump announces deal to reopen government
The announcement came as the partial government shutdown stretched to 35 days, the longest in U.S. history.
President Donald Trump on Friday announced a deal to temporarily reopen the federal government, ending the longest shutdown in U.S. history without securing any money for his proposed border wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.
The agreement, which funds the government until Feb. 15 so negotiators can try to work out a larger immigration and border security compromise, marks a major reversal for the president. The president has insisted for weeks that he wouldn't reopen the government until lawmakers agreed to fork over more than $5 billion for the border wall.

Bloomberg says Trump, at this point, 'cannot be helped'
Potential Democratic presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg said Friday that Donald Trump's presidency "cannot be helped" and was "dangerous" for the country.
The former New York City mayor also described the partial government shutdown, now at a record 35th day, as "a complete failure of presidential leadership."
The billionaire businessman said that for fellow New Yorker Trump, "the art of the deal is simply cheating people and not caring about how badly they get hurt and now he's doing it to the American people."

Pelosi brought Trump to his knees
The shutdown is finally ending. President Donald Trump went on television Friday afternoon and announced he will allow the government to reopen for three weeks.
Although picking winners and losers in politics is always tricky, there is a clear-cut case to be made that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi just completed a masterful political strategy that brought Trump to his knees. The President is going to do what the Democrats have demanded all along: Open the government now, negotiate over border security and the wall later.
Trump leaves the budget battle without getting what he wanted, badly damaged with the electorate, including among some Republican voters, and with the first cracks having emerged among congressional Republicans. This was not how he wanted to head into the year as the investigations into his administration seriously heat up.

‘What does Putin have on the President? Pelosi asks following Stone indictment.
The indictment of longtime Trump confidant Roger Stone raises questions around what Russian leader Vladimir Putin might "have" on President Donald Trump, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) suggested on Friday.
Stone was arrested early Friday morning on charges including making false statements to Congress, obstructing a congressional investigation and witness tampering in connection with special counsel Robert Mueller's ongoing Russia investigation.
In a statement responding to the arrest, Pelosi said: “The indictment of Roger Stone makes clear that there was a deliberate, coordinated attempt by top Trump campaign officials to influence the 2016 election and subvert the will of the American people."
"It is staggering that the President has chosen to surround himself with people who violated the integrity of our democracy and lied to the FBI and Congress about it," she said.
Pelosi then questioned what power Putin might have over Trump, saying: "In the face of the 37 indictments, the President's continued actions to undermine the Special Counsel investigation raises the questions: what does Putin have on the President, politically, personally or financially?”

Pelosi Statement on Special Counsel Indictment and Arrest of Trump Campaign Advisor Roger Stone
Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement after Special Counsel Mueller released a seven-count indictment of top Trump campaign advisor Roger Stone, for lying to Congress, witness tampering, and obstruction:
“The indictment of Roger Stone makes clear that there was a deliberate, coordinated attempt by top Trump campaign officials to influence the 2016 election and subvert the will of the American people. It is staggering that the President has chosen to surround himself with people who violated the integrity of our democracy and lied to the FBI and Congress about it.
“In the face of 37 indictments, the President’s continued actions to undermine the Special Counsel investigation raise the questions: what does Putin have on the President, politically, personally or financially? Why has the Trump Administration continued to discuss pulling the U.S. out of NATO, which would be a massive victory for Putin?
“Lying to Congress and witness tampering constitute grave crimes. All who commit these illegal acts should be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. We cannot allow any effort to intimidate witnesses or prevent them from appearing before Congress.
“The Special Counsel investigation is working, and the House will continue to exercise our constitutional oversight responsibility and ensure that the Special Counsel investigation can continue free from interference from the White House.”

Trump Holds WH Meeting With Far-Right Anti-LGBT Extremist Group Headed By Wife Of Clarence Thomas
President Trump met last week with a delegation of hard-right activists led by Ginni Thomas, the wife of Justice Clarence Thomas, listening quietly as members of the group denounced transgender people and women serving in the military before accusing White House aides of blocking Trump supporters from getting jobs in the administration, according to three people with direct knowledge of the events.
For 60 minutes, Mr. Trump sat, saying little but appearing taken aback, the three people said. It is unusual for the wife of a sitting Supreme Court justice to have such a meeting with the president, and some close to Mr. Trump said it was inappropriate for Ms. Thomas to have asked for a meeting with the head of a different branch of government. Ms. Thomas, whose group, Groundswell, meets weekly, joined others in prayer at the start of the meeting, and some members of the group prayed at different points as the meeting continued.
As I’ve previously reported, Ginni Thomas’s Facebook page is a cornucopia of crackpottery, filled with alt-right memes and nutjob conspiracy claims.
In 2017 Thomas, who writes for the white supremacist Daily Caller, presented an award to notorious video hoaxer James O’Keefe.

Trump Meets With Wife of Supreme Court Justice About Transgender Troops – Who He Will Ask SCOTUS to Ban
The spouse of a Supreme Court justice is lobbying the president on an issue he will bring to the court and which her husband will ultimately decide.
On Tuesday the Supreme Court in a 5-4 vote along partisan lines, decided to allow the Trump administration to jump ahead and begin implementing its long-desired ban on transgender troops serving in the U.S. Military. The move was not a ruling on a case, but rather an unusual – and to some, eyebrow-raising – decision to intervene while several cases fighting Trump's transgender ban are working their way through the federal court system.
https://www.thenewcivilrightsmovement.co...-scotus-to-ban/
Trump and Justice Thomas’ wife just got exposed in a massive abuse of power scandal
The meeting raised eyebrows inside and outside of the White House, where even some people close to the president found it out of line for Ms. Thomas to have asked for a meeting with the head of a different branch of government.
Before we condemn them as completely incorrigible, however, we should point out that at least one person in the group speaking with the president did criticize GOP congressional leaders, saying that they should be “tarred and feathered,” according to a person briefed on the meeting. Now, that’s something worth agreeing with.
That a Supreme Court Justice’s wife thinks she should have any say in the hiring practices of the Executive Branch is bad enough, but Ginni Thomas’ advocacy of a far-right agenda calls into question not only the separation of powers in the government but the impartiality of one of the justices on our nation’s highest court.
