Was ich nicht verstehe: Woher dein Hass auf die katholische Kirche (nicht dass ich mich nicht auch über sie ärgern würde): Weißt du, in welcher Stadt im Mittelalter und in der Frühneuzeit die Juden am sichersten lebten? In Rom. Das lag einerseits daran, dass der Judenhass in Italien nicht so verbreitet war wie in anderen Ländern, andererseits daran, dass das Papsttum die Juden in der Regel schützte.

Fighting the Normalization of Post-Truth Politics
Donald Trump’s rally speech in Phoenix on August 22 was full of falsehoods. The lack of outrage over his deceptive statements points to the normalization of post-truth politics, when appeals to personal beliefs and emotions wins out over objective facts. To avoid this normalization, we need to borrow the successful tactics of the environmental movement in dealing with the pollution of our environment.

During this speech, according to highly credible fact-checking organizations such as Factcheck.org and Politifact, Trump misled the audience as to his reaction to the Charlottesville violence, such as by neglecting to mention that he blamed “both sides.” He made false claims about the media, for instance that CNN’s ratings went down when they are rising, or that the media failed to report on Trump’s condemnation of racism, when they did. In the economic arena, he stated that wages “haven’t gone up for a long time,” when actually they’ve risen for at least the last three years. Another example of economic deception: Trump wrongly claimed that the US has “become an energy exporter for the first time ever just recently.”

Where is the outrage over these deceptions? This is our President, systematically sowing misinformation. Most of his falsehoods – such as the statement about the wages or CNN ratings – had been debunked earlier. Yet he kept repeating them, leaving no other interpretation than a deliberate intent to deceive, the dictionary definition of lying.

Donald Trump is playing zero-dimensional chess

...But, with each passing day, week and month, it becomes more and more undeniable that Trump has no master plan and is no master strategist. His only guiding principle is his own personal vendettas.

Take the Corker attack as yet another example of Trump's lack of strategic vision.
Yes, Corker is retiring in 2018. But, that means the Tennessee Republican will still be in the Senate for another year. Which means that Corker's vote -- on, say, tax reform -- is something Trump is going to need. (When you only have 52 Republican senators, you have very little margin for error and you need to do everything you can to keep those members happy.)
Why attack Corker then -- and risk making him mad? (And, Corker was mad; "It's a shame the White House has become an adult day care center. Someone obviously missed their shift this morning," he tweeted in response to Trump's tweets Sunday morning.)

Aside from Corker's one vote on tax reform -- or anything else Trump wants to get done in his first two years in office -- Corker is widely regarded in Washington as a serious person, well respected by his colleagues. Corker is also a conservative; this is no John McCain (Ariz.) or Susan Collins (Maine) that Trump is swatting at.

Corker's colleagues -- most notably Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn -- will watch what Trump has done this morning and wonder whether there's any point at all in trusting the President or trying to find common ground. Never forget that the Senate is an extremely clubby institution; they do not look kindly on attacks on their own.

So, why, given all of the downsides, did Trump spend his morning savaging Corker? Simple. Because Corker said something he didn't like, something that called into question the idea of Trump as the all-knowing, always-right figure that he sees in his mind's eye.

Hitting everyone who hits you, of course, isn't a strategy. It's a tactic. And, not a very good one at that.

Based on all of the evidence of Trump's first nine months in office, it's impossible to conclude that he has any sort of comprehensive strategy or theory of the case. He acts (or reacts) and sees what happens. There's no bigger plan that we're not privy to. There's really no plan at all.

Ken Starr forecasts indictments in Russia probe
Ken Starr, the independent counsel during the Monica Lewinsky and Whitewater scandals under former President Bill Clinton, predicted Saturday that special counsel Robert Mueller's probe into Russia's interference in the 2016 elections would end in indictments.

Inside Steve Bannon's war against Mitch McConnell
The next step in Steve Bannon's scorched-earth war against Republican incumbents is an attempt to cut off money to those aligned with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

The former chief strategist in President Donald Trump's White House spent the weekend in Connecticut meeting with top Republican donors, a source familiar with Bannon's plans said, as he recruits financial support for enough candidates to nationalize an anti-establishment message in 2018 GOP primaries.
He's held similar meetings in New York City and Washington, speaking with more than 25 major GOP donors so far, including hedge fund manager Scott Bessent, energy executive Dan Eberhart, private equity firm CEO John Childs and mega-donors Robert and Rebekah Mercer.

His thinking -- evidenced by the Senate's failure to advance Trump agenda items like health care -- is that Washington Republicans do not support Trump anyway. So 2018 could be a defining moment, shaking up the GOP and placing Trump's 2016 campaign agenda at its forefront.

"Nobody's safe," the source said.
Already, he had spoken with Erik Prince, the Blackwater security contractor, and GOP mega-donor Foster Friess about running against Republican Sen. John Barrasso in Wyoming.

Bannon, meanwhile, is focused on damaging people who might be considering 2020 in both parties -- including Mitt Romney, who could run for the Senate in Utah if Hatch retires.
The key, the source familiar with Bannon's plans said, "is to prove the theory of the case" -- that Republicans who are anti-Trump should be gone.

Partisanship and careerism have badly warped this discussion.

Sen. Bob Corker’s warning that President Donald Trump’s recklessness could set the country “on the path to World War III,” issued in a New York Times interview on Sunday, is notable for a few reasons.
For one, this is a critique that many Democrats and even some Republicans have made for some time — and that even more Republicans are said to make regularly in private.
For another, this is coming publicly from a Republican senator in a conservative state who chairs a major committee, has worked closely with the administration, and has had strong relationships with several of its officials. So when he says he knows “for a fact” that there’s no “good cop, bad cop” act underway, we should take him seriously.

But perhaps most noteworthy of all is that Corker only felt empowered to make such a bold critique after he had decided to retire rather than run for reelection in 2018 (as he announced at the end of last month). Only Corker’s liberation from the concerns of electoral politics, it seems, has motivated him to say what he truly thinks.

His GOP colleagues in the Senate, though, are not so liberated. So though Corker has also asserted that “the vast majority” of his fellow Republican senators understand “what we’re dealing with here” — that they share his concerns about Trump’s temperament — most of them remain hesitant to publicly discuss the issue in public.

Because of that reticence, the discussion about what potentially to do about a president who according to some is dangerously unstable has been choked off
