Exclusive excerpt: Chris Christie torches Jared
Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie settles scores in "Let Me Finish," a memoir out Jan. 29 from Hachette Books, writing that President Trump "trusts people he shouldn’t, including some of the people who are closest to him."

What he's saying: Christie asserts that Trump has a "revolving door of deeply flawed individuals — amateurs, grifters, weaklings, convicted and unconvicted felons — who were hustled into jobs they were never suited for, sometimes seemingly without so much as a background check via Google or Wikipedia."

Trump's strategic planning inspiration: Mike Tyson

...."He gets frustrated when there is a plan," the adviser said. "He’s not a guy who likes a plan. ... There’s an animosity towards planning, and there’s a desire to pick fights that have nothing to do with us."

Trump used the Tyson quote as evidence that detailed strategic plans are pointless and said, in the adviser’s recollection, "We’ve just gotta fight every day and that’s how we win."
"We can plan all this stuff out but it’ll change," the president continued. "So let’s just not go through the effort."
The adviser said that Trump's "main view was that all this stuff wasn’t predictable, ... which is unfortunately not accurate. ... It absolutely is predictable."

Why it matters: Trump's aversion to planning has been evident throughout his administration.
You see it now with his handling of the shutdown, which he entered without a clear conception of an exit ramp, according to aides.

Donald Trump’s Pattern of Deference to the Kremlin Is Clear
Now it’s on the president to explain his posture.

The Washington Post revealed that Trump has concealed details of his meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin even from other top members of his staff, going so far as to confiscate the notes produced by his interpreter during a meeting and instructing the interpreter not to speak with other officials. As I have reported, interpreters are privy to highly secret conversations, carry security clearance, and are accustomed to keeping secrets. Nonetheless, this sort of secrecy is unusual, the Post notes:

"As a result, U.S. officials said there is no detailed record, even in classified files, of Trump’s face-to-face interactions with the Russian leader at five locations over the past two years. Such a gap would be unusual in any presidency, let alone one that Russia sought to install through what U.S. intelligence agencies have described as an unprecedented campaign of election interference."

Why would Trump do this? Yes, he has a weird tendency to destroy documents (illegally). Yes, he had a vexed relationship with then–Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who has since criticized the president’s leadership. But neither of these answers really explains why Trump has been so secretive about his interactions with Putin, and it’s silly for the public (and press) to spend a lot of time speculating when Trump can answer the question.

Until he does, the interpreter episode joins a long list of incidents where Trump was strangely conciliatory or even obsequious toward Moscow. Max Boot laid out a detailed list of questionable interactions in Monday’s Washington Post, but there are a few lowlights worth reviewing.

When It Comes to Trump and Russia, Should We Apply Hanlon’s Razor or Occam’s?
It’s getting harder to believe that this can be explained by stupidity rather than malice.

...I’ve been thinking a lot lately about “Hanlon’s Razor,” and how it might apply to recent revelations about Donald Trump and Russia. Hanlon’s Razor is a common sense aphorism that reminds us, “Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.” It is a distant cousin of the more famous Occam’s Razor, which postulated that simpler explanations are more likely to be correct than complex and convoluted theories.

So, the question I’ve been asking is whether Hanlon’s Razor can be applied to the question of Trump’s bizarre romance with Vladimir Putin. Is it malice? Or stupidity? Is his fawning appeasement a sign that he is a Russian asset or a credulous dupe? Is the story of Russiagate more James Bond or, as David French suggests, more Austin Powers? ...

Exactly How Bad Is Trump At Making Deals? Even Worse Than You Think.
The shutdown stalemate highlights how the president’s strategies contradict best practices, negotiation experts explain.

There is an actual art (and science) to deal making. And after three-plus weeks of government shutdown, it should be clear by now ― if it wasn’t already― that President Donald Trump is uniquely terrible at the practice. ...

... The president spent his career positioning himself as the consummate deal-maker. He’s listed as the author, after all, of the “Art of the Deal,” though it was ghost-written. Yet, there’s little evidence he’s actually good at deal-making. Many of his best real-estate deals were actually put in place by Roy Cohn, the legendary attorney who was Trump’s original fixer, writes University of Pennsylvania Wharton School professor G. Richard Shell in a piece for the issue.
Without Cohn, who died in 1986, there have been mostly business failures and bankruptcies.

...“All the other presidents knew how to make deals,” said Carrie Menkel-Meadow, a professor of Law at the University of California Irvine Law School and a co-editor on the special issue.
“Trump doesn’t understand the basic principle: To get what you want, you have to give other people what they want,” said Menkel-Meadow, who was at Georgetown Law during the Clinton-era shutdown and trained negotiators at the Department of Justice.

A solid deal-maker also doesn’t make an enemy out of his counterparty. Ideally in politics or diplomacy, he’s built up some goodwill with them. Trump, on the other hand, demonizes and belittles his political opponents (and sometimes his allies). ...

...Since this is Trump we’re talking about perhaps the key to unlocking the stalemate begins and ends with the president’s perception of himself. “Any solution has to feed his ego,” Kochan said. “As much as it’s painful to play into that.”

Right now, he’s backed himself into a corner and if his opponents truly want to break this impasse they have to help him figure out a way to save face, said Deborah Kolb, a professor emeritus at the Simmons University School of Business in Boston and the author of Negotiating at Work: Turn Small Wins into Big Gains.
“He’s really locked himself in,” she said, adding: Great negotiators just don’t do that.

Donald Trump’s Shutdown Tantrum Isn’t Actually About The Border Wall

...But at this point, this isn’t actually about a border wall. Donald Trump just wants to maintain his image as a “tough” negotiator amid the obvious reality that neither Mexico nor Congress will fund his absurd vanity project. And the president has once again chosen to dig in and spread misinformation in an attempt to maintain two untenable lies.

On the one hand, President Trump has billed himself as a strong man who will always get the “best deal” for the American people and put U.S. citizens first. His foundational campaign promise was not just building a wall along America’s southern border, but that Mexico would pay for the wall.
....Now he’s storming out of meetings and refusing to negotiate with Democrats when told that a $5 billion allocation for his wall will not happen....

On the other hand, Trump is doing everything in his power to shift the blame away from his administration’s failure to compromise on the issue of border security and try to pin it on the Democratic party. If the president wants to come out of the national crisis he himself created (and I’m not referring to any border-related crisis), then the president’s best hope is that Americans miraculously believe his farce that Democrats are standing in the way of a building a border wall that would magically “pay for itself many times.” ...

TRUMP MUST BE A RUSSIAN AGENT; THE ALTERNATIVE IS TOO AWFUL
It would be rather embarrassing for Donald Trump at this point if Robert Mueller were to declare that the president isn’t an agent of Russian intelligence.

In short, we’ve reached a point in the Mueller probe where there are only two scenarios left: Either the president is compromised by the Russian government and has been working covertly to cooperate with Vladimir Putin after Russia helped win him the 2016 election—or Trump will go down in history as the world’s most famous “useful idiot,” as communists used to call those who could be co-opted to the cause without realizing it.

At least the former scenario—that the president of the United States is actively working to advance the interests of our country’s foremost, long-standing, traditional foreign adversary—would make him seem smarter and wilier. The latter scenario is simply a tragic farce for everyone involved.

We’re left here—in a place unprecedented in American political history, wondering how much worse the truth is than we already know—after four days of fresh revelations in the public drip-drip-drip of the Russia investigation. The past two months have seen the public understanding of the case advance into almost unthinkable territory. Now we’re simply trying to figure out how bad things really are.

With greetings from our friendly neighbors in Canada, dem Toronto Star.

Donald Trump has said 4167 false things as U.S. president
The Star is keeping track of every false claim U.S. President Donald Trump has made since his inauguration on Jan. 20, 2017. Why? Historians say there has never been such a constant liar in the Oval Office. We think dishonesty should be challenged. We think inaccurate information should be corrected. And we think the sheer frequency of Trump’s inaccuracy is a central story of his presidency.

If Trump is a serial liar, why call this a list of “false claims,” not lies? You can read our detailed explanation here. The short answer is that we can’t be sure that each and every one was intentional. In some cases, he may have been confused or ignorant. What we know, objectively, is that he was not telling the truth.

Giuliani: 'I never said there was no collusion' between Trump campaign and Russia
President Trump's personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani, said Wednesday that he "never said there was no collusion" between the Trump campaign and Russia, claiming only that Trump himself was not involved in collusion.

“I never said there was no collusion between the campaign. Or between people in the campaign," Giuliani said on CNN's "Cuomo Prime Time," after host Chris Cuomo said it was false to suggest there was no collusion between Trump's presidential campaign and the Kremlin.

Giuliani added that he has only said Trump, rather than his campaign, did not collude with the Russians.

"All this madness has something to do with “populism,” although it isn’t clear what. The leading theory is that the Russians are behind it. They’ve got some sort of hypno-technology (not to be confused with those brain-eating crickets) capable of manipulating the minds of … well, Black people, mostly, but not just Black people. Obviously, they are also controlling the French, who they have transformed into “racist, hate-filled liars” who are “attacking elected representatives, journalists, Jews, foreigners, and homosexuals,” according to French President Emmanuel Macron, the anointed “Golden Boy of Europe.” More terrifying still, Putin is now able to project words out of Trump’s mouth in real-time, literally using Trump’s head as a puppet, or like one of those Mission Impossible masks."

President Trump Directed His Attorney Michael Cohen To Lie To Congress About The Moscow Tower Project
Trump received 10 personal updates from Michael Cohen and encouraged a planned meeting with Vladimir Putin.

President Donald Trump directed his longtime attorney Michael Cohen to lie to Congress about negotiations to build a Trump Tower in Moscow, according to two federal law enforcement officials involved in an investigation of the matter.

Trump also supported a plan, set up by Cohen, to visit Russia during the presidential campaign, in order to personally meet President Vladimir Putin and jump-start the tower negotiations. “Make it happen,” the sources said Trump told Cohen.

If the story is correct, Trump told everyone Russia was innocent of a cyber attack on the opposition party while pursuing financial gain in Moscow, lied about it, and then personally directed his attorney to lie about it too. That’s not just collusion. That is conspiracy.
