Record for mainland France falls in Vaucluse département as Europe swelters in heatwave

Mainland France has registered its highest temperature since records began as Europe continues to face a sweltering heatwave.

The temperature in Carpentras, in the south-eastern Vaucluse département, hit 44.3C (112F) on Friday, breaking the previous record of 44.1C set in the southern region of Montpellier and Nîmes in August 2003.

Vaucluse was one of four départements – alongside Gard, Hérault and Bouches-du-Rhône – placed on emergency red alert on Friday, the first time the measure has covered such a large area.

The Meteo-France forecaster Etienne Kapikian said it was “very probable” that the record would be beaten again on Friday as it was still relatively early in the day. “[The temperature] will continue to climb and, in some places, we could pass 44C,” he said.

Habe gerade erfahren, dass es in Schweden ein neues Wort gibt: "Flugscham".
Dieses Flagellantentum gibt es wohl nur in protestantischen Ländern - ich glaube kaum, dass ein Russe, Grieche, Pole oder Italiener von so einem Schwachsinn infiziert ist.

Gutes Spiel. Franzosen zu oft ungenau im Abspiel. Amis auch mit etwas mit Glueck. Besonders das erste Tor. Aber immerhin. Alle Tore waren sehr schoen.

In all her years working at Bodega Bay, the marine reserve research coordinator Jackie Sones had never seen anything like it: scores of dead mussels on the rocks, their shells gaping and scorched, their meats thoroughly cooked.

A record-breaking June heatwave apparently caused the largest die-off of mussels in at least 15 years at Bodega Head, a small headland on the northern California bay. And Sones received reports from other researchers of similar mass mussel deaths at various beaches across roughly 140 miles of coastline.

While the people who flocked to the Pacific to enjoy a rare 80F beach day soaked up the sun, so did the mussel beds – where the rock-bound mollusks could have been experiencing temperatures above 100F at low tide, literally roasting in their shells.

Sones expects the die-off to affect the rest of the seashore ecosystem. “Mussels are known as a foundation species. The equivalent are the trees in a forest – they provide shelter and habitat for a lot of animals, so when you impact that core habitat it ripples throughout the rest of the system,” said Sones....

“We no longer think of climate change in the future when we do this kind of forecasting work,” Helmuth told BayNature. “It’s how do you prepare for it now.”

The University of British Columbia biologist Christopher Harley documented a mussel cook-off at Bodega Head in 2004, but he and Sones believe this one was probably bigger.
“These events are definitely becoming more frequent, and more severe,” said Harley, citing diminishing mussel beds along the west coast, up to British Columbia. “Mussels are one of the canaries in the coal mine for climate change, only this canary provides food and habitat for hundreds of other species.”

June was the hottest month ever recorded on Earth, the EU's satellite agency has announced.

Data provided by the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), implemented by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts on behalf of the EU, showed that the global-average temperature for June 2019 was the highest on record for the month.

The data showed European-average ​temperatures for June 2019 were more than 2C above normal and temperatures were 6-10C above normal over most of France, Germany and northern Spain during the final days of the month, according to C3S.

Global-average temperature was about 0.1C higher than during the previous warmest June, in 2016.

Trump has repeatedly said U.S. air and water are the "cleanest" they have ever been thanks to his administration.

But according to an Associated Press analysis published last month, there "were noticeably more polluted air days each year in the president's first two years in office than any of the four years before."
"There were 15 percent more days with unhealthy air in America both last year and the year before than there were on average from 2013 through 2016, the four years when America had its fewest number of those days since at least 1980," the AP reported.

The U.S. also does not have the cleanest water in the world, despite Trump's claim to the contrary. Since taking office in 2017, Trump has worked at the behest of the oil and gas industry to kill environmental rules designed to reduce carbon emissions and prevent pollution of the nation's air and water.

In an analysis last month, the New York Times counted "more than 80 environmental rules and regulations on the way out under Mr. Trump."
