In October 2016:
A Veteran Spy Has Given the FBI Information Alleging a Russian Operation to Cultivate Donald Trump

...In June, the former Western intelligence officer—who spent almost two decades on Russian intelligence matters and who now works with a US firm that gathers information on Russia for corporate clients—was assigned the task of researching Trump’s dealings in Russia and elsewhere, according to the former spy and his associates in this American firm. This was for an opposition research project originally financed by a Republican client critical of the celebrity mogul. (Before the former spy was retained, the project’s financing switched to a client allied with Democrats.) ...

In Januar 2017:
Intel chiefs presented Trump with claims of Russian efforts to compromise him

... The raw memos on which the synopsis is based were prepared by the former MI6 agent, who was posted in Russia in the 1990s and now runs a private intelligence gathering firm. His investigations related to Mr. Trump were initially funded by groups and donors supporting Republican opponents of Mr. Trump during the GOP primaries, multiple sources confirmed to CNN. Those sources also said that once Mr. Trump became the nominee, further investigation was funded by groups and donors supporting Hillary Clinton.

ROBERT MUELLER TIGHTENS PAUL MANAFORT’S NOOSE
The special prosecutor is reportedly working with the Manhattan U.S. attorney’s office on a money-laundering case against the former Trump campaign chairman.

...Mueller’s collaborations with Schneiderman and the Manhattan U.S. attorney’s office are particularly noteworthy, as any charges born out of the investigations would be exempt from presidential pardons—which only apply to federal crimes—raising the possibility that they could be used as leverage against Manafort and, by extension, the Trump campaign.

For his part, Trump seems to have taken an unusual level of interest in candidates for open U.S. attorney positions in Manhattan and Brooklyn—last week, Politico reported that Trump personally interviewed two front-runners for the job, both of whom have ties to Trumpworld. (Geoffrey Berman, a top pick for the Manhattan post, is a partner at the law firm where Trump ally Rudy Giuliani works, and Ed McNally, a front-runner to head the Brooklyn office, is a partner at the firm of Marc Kasowitz, Trump’s longtime personal lawyer.)

While the White House denied that such interviews were unusual, once confirmed, both U.S. attorneys will have jurisdiction over cases involving Trump associates. The head of the Eastern District of New York office, which is based in Brooklyn, would oversee the ongoing probe into Kushner Companies—the real-estate company owned by the family of Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner—over its use of the federal visa program known as EB-5. And the attorney appointed to lead the Southern District of New York would have jurisdiction over the Manafort money-laundering probe.

The Trump campaign is scrambling to distance itself from Cambridge Analytica amid Assange-Hillary Clinton email flap

The Trump campaign's executive director and digital director downplayed Cambridge Analytica's work for the campaign in separate remarks on Wednesday.
Their comments came hours after WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange confirmed in a tweet that the data firm's CEO reached out to him asking to help find Hillary Clinton's missing emails.

Key members of President Donald Trump's campaign team scrambled Wednesday to distance themselves from the data mining and analysis company Cambridge Analytica, whose CEO reportedly reached out to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange during the presidential campaign to offer help in finding Hillary Clinton's "missing" emails.

The Trump campaign hired Cambridge Analytica in June 2016 to help target ads using voter data collected from approximately 230 million US adults.
Multiple outlets, including NBC News and The Washington Post, reported that the campaign paid Cambridge Analytica more than $5 million in September alone, up from $250,000 in August.

McConnell Allies Declare War on Steve Bannon
“Allies of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell declared open warfare on Wednesday against Stephen Bannon, the former White House chief strategist and leader of an insurrection aimed at defeating mainstream GOP candidates in next year’s midterm elections,” the Washington Post reports.

“More than a year ahead of the 2018 congressional contests, a super PAC aligned with McConnell (R-KY) revealed plans to attack Bannon personally as it works to protect incumbents facing uphill primary fights. The effort reflects the growing concern of Republican lawmakers over the rise of anti-establishment forces and comes amid escalating frustration over President Trump’s conduct, which has prompted a handful of lawmakers to publicly criticize the president.”

Twitter is banning all ads from Russian news agencies RT and Sputnik effective immediately
Twitter announced on Thursday that it was immediately banning all ads on the service from the Russian news agencies RT and Sputnik.
The policy change comes one week before Twitter representatives are set to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee about how Russia exploited the platform during the election.

The company said it would donate the $1.9 million it was "projected to have earned from RT global advertising since they became an advertiser in 2011."

First charges filed in Mueller investigation
A federal grand jury in Washington on Friday approved the first charges in the investigation led by special counsel Robert Mueller, according to sources briefed on the matter.

The charges are still sealed under orders from a federal judge. Plans were prepared Friday for anyone charged to be taken into custody as soon as Monday, the sources said. It is unclear what the charges are.

First charges in Mueller investigation into Russia meddling have been filed
A federal grand jury in Washington on Friday approved the first charges in the investigation led by special counsel Robert Mueller into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, a source briefed on the matter told Reuters.

The filing of the sealed charges was first reported by CNN.
The charges are sealed under orders from a federal judge, and it was not clear what the charges were, adding that anyone facing charges could be taken into custody as soon as Monday.

U.S. intelligence agencies concluded in January that Russia interfered in the election to try to help President Donald Trump defeat Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton through a campaign of hacking and releasing embarrassing emails, and disseminating propaganda via social media to discredit her campaign.

Special counsel Robert Mueller, a former director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, is investigating whether Trump campaign officials colluded with those Russian efforts.
"If the Special Counsel finds it necessary and appropriate, the Special Counsel is authorized to prosecute federal crimes arising from the investigation of these matters," Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said in a May 17 letter appointing Mueller.

What Mueller's move means
As soon as Monday, the Mueller investigation begins a new phase that moves it from background music in national politics to center stage, with massive stakes for President Trump and both parties.

What's new: "A federal grand jury in Washington [yesterday] approved the first charges in the investigation led by special counsel Robert Mueller," CNN scoops. "The charges are still sealed under orders from a federal judge. Plans were prepared Friday for anyone charged to be taken into custody as soon as Monday."

Why it matters, from MSNBC's Ari Melber: "[W]e're moving away from a political fight, where everyone can see it the way they want, and into ... a legal process — where there are rules of evidence, facts are established. ... Bob Mueller is known to be a pretty careful prosecutor."

Be smart: Matt Miller — former Obama Justice Department official, and close Mueller watcher, emails me: "I think it means this will be a rolling investigation. Rather than conduct his entire investigation and then wrap things up with indictments and possibly a report at the end, he is doing it in stages, the way the Justice Department might attack a drug cartel or a mafia family."

Miller adds that this "is a watershed moment for the politics surrounding the investigation. In less than six months on the job, Mueller has already returned indictments.
"This isn't a fishing expedition or a witch hunt — it's an investigation that's already born fruit with a grand jury of regular Americans finding probable cause that a crime was committed."

Ex-CIA Director Spoke to Mueller About Flynn’s Alleged Turkish Scheme
Former CIA Director James Woolsey has been interviewed by FBI agents working for Special Counsel Robert Mueller about allegations that Mike Flynn discussed the potentially illegal removal of a Turkish cleric from the U.S., Woolsey's spokesman told NBC News. ...

Woolsey told The Journal he arrived at the meeting in New York on Sept. 19 in the middle of the discussion, and believed the actions being discussed were possibly illegal.
The topic was a Turkish cleric living in the U.S., blamed by the Turkish government for fomenting a 2016 coup attempt. ...

... Turkish government officials — including the son-in-law of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the country's foreign minister — were discussing with Flynn how to get the cleric, Fethullah Gülen, back to Turkey, the Journal reported.
Woolsey told the Journal that the idea was "a covert step in the dead of night to whisk this guy away."
