United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
USCCB President, Vice President And Committee Chairmen Denounce Administration’s Decision To End DACA And Strongly Urge Congress To Find Legislative Solution.

"The cancellation of the DACA program is reprehensible. It causes unnecessary fear for DACA youth and their families. These youth entered the U.S. as minors and often know America as their only home. The Catholic Church has long watched with pride and admiration as DACA youth live out their daily lives with hope and a determination to flourish and contribute to society: continuing to work and provide for their families, continuing to serve in the military, and continuing to receive an education. Now, after months of anxiety and fear about their futures, these brave young people face deportation. This decision is unacceptable and does not reflect who we are as Americans.

Exzellenter Artikel.

The First White President
The foundation of Donald Trump’s presidency is the negation of Barack Obama’s legacy.

IT IS INSUFFICIENT TO STATE the obvious of Donald Trump: that he is a white man who would not be president were it not for this fact. ...

His political career began in advocacy of birtherism, that modern recasting of the old American precept that black people are not fit to be citizens of the country they built. But long before birtherism, Trump had made his worldview clear. He fought to keep blacks out of his buildings, according to the U.S. government; called for the death penalty for the eventually exonerated Central Park Five; and railed against “lazy” black employees. “Black guys counting my money! I hate it,” Trump was once quoted as saying. “The only kind of people I want counting my money are short guys that wear yarmulkes every day.”
After his cabal of conspiracy theorists forced Barack Obama to present his birth certificate, Trump demanded the president’s college grades (offering $5 million in exchange for them), insisting that Obama was not intelligent enough to have gone to an Ivy League school, and that his acclaimed memoir, Dreams From My Father, had been ghostwritten by a white man, Bill Ayers. ...

It is often said that Trump has no real ideology, which is not true—his ideology is white supremacy, in all its truculent and sanctimonious power.

How Democrats Rolled Trump on the Debt Ceiling
At his morning press conference, Ryan had been withering about this idea. “Let’s just think about this,” he said. “We’ve got all this devastation in Texas. We’ve got another unprecedented hurricane about to hit Florida. And they want to play politics with the debt ceiling? That will strand the aid that we need to bring to these victims of these storms that have occurred or are about to occur. And then they also want to threaten default on our debt? I think that’s ridiculous and disgraceful that they want to play politics with the debt ceiling at this moment.”
He added that the idea was “unworkable,” and, speaking for Trump, noted, “What the President doesn’t want to do is to give more leverage where it shouldn’t occur on the debt ceiling.”

An hour later, in the Oval Office, Ryan, McConnell, Schumer, and Pelosi sat down with Trump and Steve Mnuchin, the Treasury Secretary, to negotiate. The Republican leaders—at first—stuck to their demand for an eighteen-month debt-ceiling increase. But the Democrats held fast as the Republicans dropped their request to twelve months and then to six months. Mnuchin argued that the financial markets needed a long-term deal. Trump cut him off and abruptly sided with Schumer and Pelosi on their three-month request.

Mnuchin: White House Is ‘Very Happy’ With Trump Making A Deal With Dems
Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin on Thursday said the White House is “very comfortable” with a deal President Donald Trump made siding with Democrats over the unanimous opposition of Republicans.
“The President’s priority was to make sure that we had funding for Harvey and to make sure we raised the debt limit to pay for that, and we’ve accomplished that,” Mnuchin said on Fox Business’ “Mornings with Maria.”

Trump on Wednesday left Republicans shell-shocked after he backed a proposal by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to tie aid for Hurricane Harvey relief to a three-month increase in the federal debt limit and a short-term government funding bill.
Mnuchin reportedly opposed the short term deal to no avail; according to Politico, Trump cut his treasury secretary’s counter-argument off in mid-sentence.
Mnuchin on Thursday said a longer one-year deal was “on the table” but that it would not have squared with Trump’s priorities.
“We’ve very happy that we have a deal,” he said. “We’re comfortable.”

Ryan: Trump Knifed GOP For ‘Bipartisan Moment’ Amid Storm Response
House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) on Thursday said President Donald Trump sided with Democrats on a debt limit deal despite unanimous Republican opposition because Trump wanted “a bipartisan moment” as Hurricane Irma barreled toward Florida.

Asked whether he thinks Trump is a reliable negotiating partner on subjects dear to Republicans’ hearts, Ryan said, “I do, I do.”

Das ist jetzt:
Trump suggested scrapping future debt ceiling votes to congressional leaders
President Donald Trump suggested to congressional leaders on Wednesday morning that votes to raise the debt ceiling could be done away with altogether, according to three people familiar with the conversation.
In a meeting with GOP and Democratic leaders, in which Trump sided with the Democrats on a fiscal deal to raise the debt ceiling, the president said he believes the votes are unproductive, those people said. Many lawmakers dread the vote, particularly Republicans, some of whom disagree with attempts to raise the debt ceiling without major fiscal reforms.

Das war damals:
‘I cannot believe the Republicans are extending the debt ceiling’: Trump’s awkward tweets
Art of the deal.
Trump’s decision to work with Democrats to raise the debt ceiling with no strings attached represents a sharp break from the rhetoric he was known for during the Obama years.
In 2011, Trump said that if he were president, he’d refuse to raise the debt ceiling unless he could strike a deal to “stop [the debt] right now.” In a tweet, he asserted “there is no revenue problem.”
Tweets:
Congress is back.TIME TO CUT, CAP AND BALANCE.There is no revenue problem. The Debt Limit cannot be raised until Obama spending is contained.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 6, 2011

He is destroying our country:@BarackObama has requested to raise our debt limit to over $16.4Trillion by the end...
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 28, 2011

The Republicans once again hold all the cards with the debt ceiling. They can get everything they want. Focus!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 28, 2012

Republicans, don’t extend the debt ceiling—make the great deal now!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 22, 2013

und so weiter und so fort.

... Trump said “the debt limit must be used as a weapon to force spending cuts. Trump said he would be ‘very very strong on the debt limit’ and insisted on ‘a very big pound of flesh’ before agreeing to any increase.”

Inside Trump's head-scratching deal with "Chuck and Nancy"
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is perplexed, with no idea what President Trump thinks he was gaining.
In fact, McConnell rather doubts the president has a strategy, a close source tells Axios.

House Speaker Paul Ryan is furious, according to a person very close to him.

Both felt blindsided by Trump's stunning decision yesterday to abruptly side with "Chuck and Nancy," as he chummily called the Democratic leaders, in a deal to avert a government shutdown Sept. 30 — at the price of reviving the politically painful issue right before the 2018 elections.

Soak this in: It's now possible that Trump's biggest legislative wins this year will be more spending and raising the debt cap — the exact opposite of what Tea Party Republicans came to D.C. to do.

Trump "brazenly rolled his own party's leaders," as AP put it.
Plus his own Treasury secretary, Steve Mnuchin — in front of leaders of both parties.

Why it matters: Tax reform is now less likely, with trust ruptured between Trump and Republican Hill leaders. Democrats are more likely to flip the House in 2018: Republicans have less than ever to show their voters.

Be smart: This was a seminal moment for Republican congressional leaders. They left the Oval having watched the titular leader of their party side with Dems, right in front of them. They watched their carefully laid plans — using Harvey funding as leverage to push through a long-term debt ceiling extension — blow up in their faces.

The hostility that Republicans on the Hill feel towards Trump deepened.

One senior GOP official, summing up the day: "He f----d us."

A prominent Midwest GOP operative emails me: "Democrats got more done in a single Oval Office visit in one afternoon than the congressional Republicans have achieved all year."

Upbeat Trump raves to Schumer, Pelosi about news coverage of their deal
The president called the Democratic leaders after striking a budget deal that Republicans hate.

Many Republicans were furious with President Donald Trump's budget deal Wednesday, stunned that the president quickly gave in to Democratic demands to pair hurricane relief with a three-month debt limit hike — though getting nothing in return.

But in calls with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi Thursday morning, Trump raved about the positive news coverage it had received, according to people familiar with the calls, and he seemed very pleased with his decision.

Ryan On Trump Siding With Dems: ‘It’s Perfectly Reasonable And Rational’
Just before President Donald Trump sided with the Democrats this week and raise the debt ceiling for three months, instead of the six months Republicans were asking for, Speaker of the House Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) called the Democrats’ plan “ridiculous.”
Now he’s on board.
Appearing on Fox New Thursday night, Ryan defended the President saying his decision was “perfectly reasonable and rational.

Russian politician says on live TV that Russia stole U.S. presidency
Russian politician Vyacheslav Nikonov, a member of the Duma, said U.S. "intelligence missed it when Russian intelligence stole the president of the United States." He made the remarks on a Russian panel show, "Sunday Evening with Vladimir Solovyov."

The episode centered on the U.S.' diminishing power on the world stage and the resulting chaos, The Hill reports. University of Virginia professor Allen Lynch told The Hill that Nikonov's statement was directed at the idea that the U.S. must be losing power if it can't uphold the integrity of its own electoral system.
