Trump’s sister retires from the federal judiciary to avoid ethics investigation into her taxes
On Wednesday, The New York Times reported that Maryanne Trump Barry, President Donald Trump’s older sister, is retiring as a federal judge.

Trump Barry, who sits on the Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, was hit with a misconduct complaint last October, stemming from a report that the Trump family used fraudulent tax schemes to increase their inheritance. Retiring from the bench ends that investigation.

U.S. deficit swells by $691 billion in first half of 2019
The Treasury Department revealed in a budget report on Wednesday that the country’s deficit grew by $691 billion in the first half of the 2019 fiscal year — beginning Oct. 1, 2018 — compared with the $600 billion in the comparable period last year, Reuters reports.

The big picture: This jump is due to the sweeping tax cuts passed at the end of 2017 and increased federal spending. The national debt passed $22 trillion, the most ever — $2 trillion of which has been spent since Trump took office. According to the department, federal spending last month reached $376 billion, a 10% drop from the same month in 2018.

Mueller Biographer: McConnell “Aided And Abetted” Russia’s Attack On The U.S.
Garrett Gaff said of the Republican: "Mitch McConnell aided and abetted the Russian attack on the 2016 election."

Garrett Gaff, writer of the biography of Robert Mueller (The Threat Matrix: Inside Robert Mueller’s FBI and the War on Global Terror) joins the UnPresidential Podcast to discuss the Russia probe.
When asked, how did we get here? Gaff responds that “the whole thing began as an effort to protect the Trump campaign.” The probe began as an FBI counterintelligence investigation, which is meant to counter the attempt of a foreign adversary to influence Americans.

Retiring as a Judge, Trump’s Sister Ends Court Inquiry Into Her Role in Tax Dodges
President Trump’s older sister, Maryanne Trump Barry, has retired as a federal appellate judge, ending an investigation into whether she violated judicial conduct rules by participating in fraudulent tax schemes with her siblings.

The court inquiry stemmed from complaints filed last October, after an investigation by The New York Times found that the Trumps had engaged in dubious tax schemes during the 1990s, including instances of outright fraud, that greatly increased the inherited wealth of Mr. Trump and his siblings. Judge Barry not only benefited financially from most of those tax schemes, The Times found; she was also in a position to influence the actions taken by her family.

Judge Barry, now 82, has not heard cases in more than two years but was still listed as an inactive senior judge, one step short of full retirement. In a letter dated Feb. 1, a court official notified the four individuals who had filed the complaints that the investigation was “receiving the full attention” of a judicial conduct council. Ten days later, Judge Barry filed her retirement papers.

The status change rendered the investigation moot, since retired judges are not subject to the conduct rules.
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/10/us/ma...sXci6RI-l7pnBUw

What a coinkydink! Ten days after she was told she was the focus of a judicial investigation into her participation in Trump family tax fraud schemes, Trump’s sister announced her retirement in order to shut down the investigation.

Mike Huckabee Blames Weak Christians for the Existence of Trans People
Former Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee (a.k.a. Sarah Huckabee Sanders‘ dad and guy who wishes he could’ve showered with girls in high school) has some thoughts about the biggest threat to the “moral fiber” of America, by which he means our nation’s “biblical principles.”

It’s not Donald Trump. It’s not a foreign enemy. It’s not lying your ass off in order to keep your job in the White House.

In an interview with the Christian Post, Huckabee said the biggest threat to the biblical principles that define our nation’s goodness is transgender people… or at least our “failure to apply a biblical standard of maleness and femaleness,” which is Christianese for the existence and acceptance of transgender people.
https://friendlyatheist.patheos.com/2019...98p54aLyJOGC_bY

Er müsste sich stattdessen dafür einsetzen, die Bibel umzuschreiben: Genesis 5:2: ‘Male and female He created them.’” Muss künftig heißen: "Male and female and transgender and asexual and two-spirit person and FTM and 65 other genders She created them."

Die LGBTQIA-Frage (ich hoffe, ich bin noch auf Stand, es kommen ja immer neue Buchstaben hinzu; nicht, dass ich jemanden diskriminiere) ist wirklich eine Frage, von der unsere Existenz abhängt.

Assange arrest: Trump claims to 'know nothing about WikiLeaks' despite past praise – live
“I know nothing about Wikileaks. It’s not my thing,” Donald Trump told reporters asking for a reaction to the arrest. That is not what he said on the campaign, when he frequently praised the organisation that Assange founded, and which arguably played an important role in getting Trump elected.
https://www.theguardian.com/media/live/2...sy-live-updates

Why Is Trump Suddenly Playing Dumb About WikiLeaks?
“I know nothing about WikiLeaks” says president who has repeatedly praised WikiLeaks

The question about whether Trump’s love for the organization has endured is in reference to a comment the president made at a 2016 campaign rally after WikiLeaks released the bounty of hacked Democratic emails. “Oh, we love WikiLeaks,” Trump said, praising the release of the stolen materials.

It was only one of several occasions Trump commended WikiLeaks during the campaign. He mentioned it 141 times in the last month of the campaign alone as he sought to use the hacked emails to cast Hillary Clinton’s campaign in an unflattering light. “WikiLeaks is unbelievable,” he said at one rally.

Such a fixture was “WikiLeaks” in Trump’s stump speeches that several supercuts have been made of him relishing the damage the organization did to his opponent.

Lou Dobbs misrepresented a poll that had the president at 55% unfavorable, and Trump tweeted it out as “great news”
Fox Business host and Trump sycophant Lou Dobbs last night falsely stated that 55% of Americans approve of President Donald Trump. Dobbs was using the results of a Georgetown Institute of Politics and Public Service survey that had actually found 55% of registered likely voters had an unfavorable view of Trump. But a graphic on Lou Dobbs Tonight incorrectly showed 55% overall approval of the president. Trump, who regularly watches Dobbs’ show and often speaks with him on policy matters, shared the graphic with his Twitter followers as “great news.”

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D33k3xBXkAEuv6f.jpg

As reporters and the director of the institute noted, the survey had found that Trump’s approval rating was at only 43%.

Watch: Young Stephen Miller jokes “torture is a celebration of life”
It’s the unofficial position of VICE News that anyone under 18 is allowed to be an asshole. Saying outrageous things to test the limits of authority and social acceptance is as crucial to growing up as bad haircuts and regrettable T-shirt slogans. Provided such speech never crosses the line into hate or criminality, the consequences should be minimal. Live, learn, etc.

So we debated whether to publish this video of Stephen Miller, the 31-year-old senior aide to President Donald Trump. In the video, a high school–aged Miller jokingly calls torture “a celebration of life and human dignity,” and adds that cutting off the fingers of Saddam Hussein and his cronies is the “ideal solution” to America’s involvement in Iraq. Miller’s identity in the footage was confirmed by three contemporaneous sources, and it appears that the video was filmed in 2003, around the time of the invasion of Iraq.

Miller is a political prodigy, and just a few years after high school he was influencing national policy, first as a member of then-Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions’ staff and now as a key aide to the president. Miller was reportedly responsible for writing Trump’s executive order that suspended America’s refugee program for 120 days and banned travelers from seven majority-Muslim countries entry into the United States for 90 days. (On May 25, a federal appeals court declined to reinstate the order, setting up a possible Supreme Court case.)

Given Miller’s importance as a national figure, we decided that his statements within the video are instructive in understanding Miller. We shared it with White House spokesperson Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who said the video was created in jest and challenged its newsworthiness.

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos admits she knowingly harmed trans students
She knew, but implemented damaging policies anyway

In an exchange on Capitol Hill, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos admitted in a hearing she knew about the potential dangers to transgender students before she implemented various policies.
DeVos appeared before the House Education Committee during a hearing on Wednesday (10 April).

Did you know, when you rolled back the guidance, that the stress of harassment and discrimination can lead to lower attendance and grades as well as depression for transgender students?’ Bonamici repeated.
‘I do know that,’ DeVos said in response. ‘But I will say again that OCR is committed to ensuring all students have access to their education free from discrimination.’
Later on in the exchange, Bonamici also asked DeVos if she knew about data showing how suicide ideation is higher among trans youth, to which DeVos responded affirmatively.

Mike Pence’s reply to Pete Buttigieg ignores the brutality of anti-LGBTQ policies
Vice President Mike Pence's policies are oppressive and violent for LGBTQ people. Niceties won't change that.

Vice President Mike Pence portrayed his anti-LGBTQ rights record as just a matter of opinion in an interview Thursday and suggested Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg should be more respectful.

Buttigieg singled Pence out during a speech last weekend at the LGBTQ Victory Fund National Champagne Brunch in Washington, D.C.
“If me being gay was a choice, it was a choice that was made far, far above my pay grade,” Buttigieg said. “And that’s the thing I wish the Mike Pences of the world would understand. That if you got a problem with who I am, your problem is not with me — your quarrel, sir, is with my creator.”

Pence responded to Buttigieg’s remarks in an interview with CNBC Thursday, maintaining that this a matter of faith and opinion.

When Pence suggests Buttigieg, a gay man running for president, is criticizing his record for media attention or just to move the Democratic Party to the left, he willfully ignores how he has worked to prevent Buttgieg from enjoying the same rights as him for his entire career. In doing so, Pence also dismisses LGBTQ rights as a frivolous concern and ignores the fact that his actions have real economic and health consequences for LGBTQ people facing discrimination and violence.

Und nun der alte Oberluegner:

Ex-Pope Benedict XVI blames 1960s revolution for sex abuse
Retired Pope Benedict XVI has published a letter which blames clerical sex abuse on the "all-out sexual freedom" of the 1960s.

He said that cultural and historical change had led to a "dissolution" of morality in Catholicism.
The sexual revolution in the 1960s had led to homosexuality and paedophilia in Catholic establishments, he claimed.

The letter sparked fierce criticism from theologians who claim it is "deeply flawed".

"Tucker Carlson said even Idi Amin did not get the type of coverage WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange receives. Assange was arrested Thursday at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London. Carlson said Assange is not sleazier than any journalist in Washington and has broke stories that others would win Pulitzers for."

"Assange’s real sin was preventing Hillary Clinton from becoming president," Carlson explained. "There was a time, not so long ago, when reporters didn’t applaud the arrest of other journalists for publishing information."

Republicans Turn Away From Experts and Economics
Conservatives ignore findings that government intervention can help the economy.

...But the advancement of both Moore and Cain, together with the rejection of Diamond, shows a Republican party -- and a conservative movement -- that is slowly abandoning the economics profession. ...

... With this intellectual shift underway, perhaps it’s natural that Republicans would start to view pundits and pizza executives as preferable to professors. There are still high-profile academic economists who lean to the political right -- Harvard University’s Robert Barro, for example, or Stanford University’s John Taylor. A few prominent Republican policy advisers, like Glenn Hubbard of Columbia University Graduate School of Business, have solid academic credentials. But trumpeting these credentials might force Republicans to admit the equal or greater authority of the expertise among economists who advise the Democrats and urge more government intervention.

Whether that’s the case -- or whether Moore and Cain are just one more manifestation of increasing GOP hostility to academia in general -- it signifies a shift in the public role of the economics profession. The idea that economics is a conservative science is losing its grip on the public consciousness.
