Megachurch pastor: Donald Trump ‘is the most Christian president we’ve had in history’
Megachurch pastor Robert Jeffress is one of Donald Trump‘s biggest supporters. He recently said on Lou Dobbs‘ Fox News show that he hopes the 2020 election will “break the backs of the left,” as he believes the survival of America is at stake.

Just ahead of attending Trump’s official campaign launch in Orlando, Florida today, Jeffress said, “this next election in 2020 is not only about giving the president a second term, I believe it’s about the survival of our nation.”

He repeated the right’s usual hyperbolic rhetoric about the left wanting to destroy America and constantly being on the verge of succeeding. He said that the left has attempted a “coup” against Trump and that if the left gets control “they’re never going to let go and it’s going to be the end of America as we know it.”

Jeffress spoke of Trump’s “godly policies” being the only thing that can save America.
“And that is why, as a Christian, I am standing up and encouraging other Christians to stand up for this president and his godly policies. I believe, as millions of Christians do, this is America’s last chance. We can’t get it wrong.” ...

Jim Bakker: If Trump loses in 2020, Christians will ‘die one after another’
On a recent episode of The Jim Bakker Show, host Jim Bakker returned to one of his favorite conspiracy theories, which involves various assassination plots planned by liberals targeting Christian leaders and politicians who support President Trump.

During a monologue to his audience, Bakker declared that Trump was elected because “God’s people” went to the polls and voted, and the “enemies of the gospel know it.”

“I’m going to say something I probably shouldn’t say,” Bakker warned in a video clip flagged by Right Wing Watch. “What’s coming next, if we keep losing, you’re going to see the leaders of the church and the leaders of the gospel and the political conservative leaders that are powerful, you are going to see them suddenly die, suddenly killed—suddenly as they were driving, suddenly as they were in a boat, suddenly in an airplane—you’re going to see it one after another.”

Christian prophet: Christians will spark ‘civil war’ if LGBT equality happens
The June 17 edition of The Jim Bakker Show was quite a doozy. Appearing with televangelist grifter and host Jim Bakker was Cindy and Mike Jacobs of the Generals International ministry.
While praising Trump’s godliness, Cindy Jacobs took a moment to warn viewers what would happen if the Senate votes to pass the Equality Act.
“We are are the voice preparing the way, and there does come a time, Jim, where things turn,” she said, speaking to Bakker. “You know, when suddenly the Lord say, ‘Okay, no more — I’m not gonna put up with this anymore.'”

““I said many years ago—and I took quite a lot of guff from the press about it—that we would even come to a place of civil war,” she said. “You try to take the Bible away and say that we cannot preach the gospel of the lord, Jesus Christ, there are millions of believers in America and I believe that would be the dumbest thing for them to do—because if they do that, or they pass this Equality Act, listen, there is going to be a shaking. There is going to be a shaking and Christians will rise up.” ...

During the same segment, Bakker asked her how Christians can support Trump when the things out of his mouth aren’t always so godly.
Not to worry she said, because Trump is “becoming more and more godly.”

Franklin Graham: God ‘was behind’ Trump’s election
In an interview with the right-wing outlet Western Journal, evangelist and evangelical leader Franklin Graham characterized President Trump as a figure sent by God who is also one of the “best presidents” America has ever had.

Graham heaped praise on Trump throughout the interview, saying the 45th President has accomplished a lot even though he hasn’t had a “fully supportive Republican majority,” adding that Trump “may go down in history as one of the best presidents we’ve had.”
“I think he has honored his commitments to the faith-based community,” Graham said. “He is pro-life, [the] first president really in my lifetime that has been this vocal about life. I certainly appreciate that about him.

Graham also said that Trump has delivered when it comes to appointing conservative judges to the Supreme Court.
“He’s put two Supreme Court justices so far on the bench that are conservative,” he told the outlet. “He’s appointed a number at lower courts. I hope that he’ll be able to do even more in that area, because that will have an impact on my [children’s] lives. If we have the right judges, it will benefit all of us.”

Echoing other pro-Trump evangelicals, Graham framed Trump’s election as a form of divine intervention, saying that God played a part in his rise to the Oval Office.
“I think God was behind the last election,” he said.

Pastors, Not Politicians, Turned Dixie Republican
“White Democrats will desert their party in droves the minute it becomes a black party.”
Kevin Phillips, The Emerging Republican Majority, 1969

Thirty years ago, archconservative Rick Perry was a Democrat and liberal icon Elizabeth Warren was a Republican. Back then there were a few Republican Congressmen and Senators from Southern states, but state and local politics in the South was still dominated by Democrats. By 2014 that had changed entirely as the last of the Deep South states completed their transition from single-party Democratic rule to single party rule under Republicans. The flight of the Dixiecrats was complete.

.... Southern churches, warped by generations of theological evolution necessary to accommodate slavery and segregation, were all too willing to offer their political assistance to a white nationalist program. Southern religious institutions would lead a wave of political activism that helped keep white nationalism alive inside an increasingly unfriendly national climate. Forget about Goldwater, Nixon or Reagan. No one played as much of a role in turning the South red as the leaders of the Southern Baptist Church. ....

... Spirituality may be personal, but organized religion, like race, is a cultural construct. When you’ve lost the ability to mobilize supporters based on race, religion will serve as a capable proxy. What was lost under the banner of “segregation forever” has been tenuously preserved through a continuing “culture war.” A fight for white nationalism and white cultural supremacy has in some ways been more successful after its transformation into an expressly religious, rather than merely racist crusade.

Religion is endlessly pliable. So long as pastors or priests (or in this case, televangelists) are willing to apply their theological creativity to serve political demands, religious institutions can be bent to advance any policy goal. ....

Evangelical group wants gays removed from anti-lynching bill
Liberty Counsel Chairman Mat Staver opposes including the words "sexual orientation" and "gender identity" in a federal anti-lynching bill.

The U.S. Senate last month unanimously passed a bill that would explicitly make lynching a federal crime. Not everyone, however, is pleased with passage of the Justice for Victims of Lynching Act.

Liberty Counsel, an evangelical nonprofit that opposes gay rights, and its chairman, Mat Staver, are taking issue with the bill’s inclusion of LGBTQ people.

Lawyers claim infants, children are in dangerous situation at border detention site
“In my 22 years of doing visits with children in detention I have never heard of this level of inhumanity,” said an attorney representing the detained youth.

A legal team that recently interviewed over 60 children at a Border Patrol station in Texas says a traumatic and dangerous situation is unfolding for some 250 infants, children and teens locked up for up to 27 days without adequate food, water and sanitation.

A team of attorneys who recently visited the facility near El Paso told The Associated Press that three girls, ages 10 to 15, said they had been taking turns keeping watch over a sick 2-year-old boy because there was no one else to look after him.

Flu, Lice, and Open Toilets: What Attorneys Saw at Migrant Child Processing Centers
Attorneys who work with migrant children recently visited two Border Patrol processing centers along the U.S.-Mexico border — and what they saw paints a bleak picture of the Trump administration’s treatment of child migrants.

The attorneys said that hundreds of kids are being held in filthy, overcrowded, and increasingly dangerous conditions at the Border Patrol station in Clint, Texas and the Ursula processing center in McAllen, Texas — often for weeks at a time. The facilities are riddled with flu and lice outbreaks and often lack proper adult supervision. Some older kids even have to take care of the younger ones.

Inside a Texas Building Where the Government Is Holding Immigrant Children
Hundreds of immigrant children who have been separated from their parents or family members are being held in dirty, neglectful, and dangerous conditions at Border Patrol facilities in Texas. This week, a team of lawyers interviewed more than fifty children at one of those facilities, in Clint, Texas, in order to monitor government compliance with the Flores settlement, which mandates that children must be held in safe and sanitary conditions and moved out of Border Patrol custody without unnecessary delays. The conditions the lawyers found were shocking: flu and lice outbreaks were going untreated, and children were filthy, sleeping on cold floors, and taking care of each other because of the lack of attention from guards. Some of them had been in the facility for weeks.

Trump’s Sinister Assault on Truth
The president appears committed to destroying the very idea of facts.
Peter Wehner

... "Words can be polluted even more dramatically and drastically than rivers and land and sea", one of my favorite writers, Malcolm Muggeridge, once wrote. “Their misuse is our undoing.”

... Eventually, we all come to understand that words are the means by which we teach and inspire, defend truth, and seek justice. (Those of us of the Christian faith don’t consider it an accident that the first sentence in the Gospel of John is, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”) So words have extraordinary power—in our daily lives most of all, but in politics as well.

Democracy requires that we honor the culture of words. The very idea of democracy is based on the hope that fellow citizens can reason together and find a system for adjudicating differences and solving problems—all of which assumes there is a shared commitment to the integrity of our public words. If you believe words can ennoble, you must also believe they can debase. If they can elevate the human spirit, they can also pull it down. And when words are weaponized by our political leaders and used to paint all opponents as inherently evil, stupid, or weak, then democracy’s foundations are put in peril. Which brings us to the dismal, demoralizing Donald Trump era.

The debasement of words has reached a zenith with the coming of America’s 45th president, who dominates discourse in this country in ways perhaps no other president ever has. And if we hope to repair the damage that’s been done, we need to understand what it is about Trump’s misuse of words that is pernicious and dangerous.

The least problematic part is the sheer banality of Donald Trump’s words. During his presidency, Trump has uttered no beautiful and memorable phrases. His inaugural address, which is a speech normally meant to inspire the citizenry, is remembered, if at all, for the phrase American carnage and Trump’s description of a dystopian nation, broken and shattered. More worrisome is that many of Trump’s utterances are an incoherent word salad. If you read the transcript of many of his interviews and extemporaneous speeches, you often find that Trump is not only unable to lay out a coherent argument; at times he’s unable to string together sentences that parse.

But that’s hardly the worst of Trump’s misuses of words. When it comes to dealing with those who oppose him, he consistently uses words to demean, belittle, bully, or dehumanize. He has mocked former prisoners of war, the disabled, and the appearance of women. He has perpetuated conspiracy theories. He has attacked Gold Star parents and widows. And he has engaged in racially tinged attacks. The number of his targets is inexhaustible because Trump’s brutishness is inexhaustible.

Many other presidents have been viewed as divisive figures, but none have taken as much delight as Trump in provoking acrimony, malice, and bitterness for their own sake; in turning Americans against one another in order to turn them against one another. He seems to find psychic satisfaction in doing so.

The banality and weaponization of Trump’s words are bad enough, but the greatest cause for concern is his nonstop, dawn-to-midnight assault on facts, truth, reality. That places Trump in a sinister category all his own. ...

Trump is not simply a serial liar; he is attempting to murder the very idea of truth, which is even worse. “The point of modern propaganda isn’t only to misinform or push an agenda,” according to the Russian dissident and former world chess champion Garry Kasparov. “It is to exhaust your critical thinking, to annihilate truth.”

This is an urgent matter, and it makes this a dangerous moment because without truth and a common factual basis for our national life, a free society cannot operate. And right now, for a significant number of Americans—including many people on the right who long defended the concept of objective truth and repeatedly rang the alarm bell about the rise of relativism—truth is viewed as relative rather than objective, malleable rather than solid; as instrumental, as a means to an end, as a weapon in our intense political war. A depressingly large number of Trump supporters—again, many of whom have for years agreed with the conservative political philosopher Allan Bloom that relativism was impoverishing our souls—now seem to relish this “post-truth” political moment. ...

Destroy the foundation of factual truth, and lies will be normalized. This is what the Czech dissident (and later president) Václav Havel described in the late 1970s when he wrote about his fellow citizens making their own inner peace with a regime built on hypocrisy and falsehoods. They were “living within the lie.” In such a situation life becomes farcical, demoralizing, a theater of the absurd. It is soul-destroying. ...

Each of us can refuse to become complicit in lies. We can refuse to defend them, refuse to believe them, and refuse to spread them, including lies that might help our political causes. We can also venture outside of our ideological silos, listen to other sources of information, and take into account other perspectives. (Think about how often we listen not to understand but in order to refute.) All of us can do better to remind ourselves that the main point of gathering information isn’t to reaffirm the views we already hold; it’s to better ascertain the truth.

https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...YXwas-oqrnweXNA

A lie is a lie, even if everyone believes it
The truth is still the truth, even if no one believes it.

What I Saw at the Dilley, Texas, Immigrant Detention Center
The stories I heard from the women and children trapped in Trump’s willfully cruel immigration system will stay with me forever.
By Martin Garbus

When I first started to write this, I was crying. I was flying back from Dilley, Texas, the site of the largest family-detention center in the United States. It is 75 miles from the Texas-Mexico border. The center is actually a prison—an internment camp. I see the faces and hear the voices of the women and children I just left.

I spent one week at Dilley, leaving early in February, as a volunteer lawyer to help these families with their asylum applications. Nearly every one of the almost 500 people that I saw in the detention center was sick. There were, at the end of my visit, 15 infants in the center—two children had previously died in government custody, though not in the Dilley facility. ...

Trump admin's 'tent cities' cost more than keeping migrant kids with parents
Separating migrant kids from their parents will cost the administration more than placing them in permanent structures or keeping them with their parents.

The cost of holding migrant children who have been separated from their parents in newly created "tent cities" is $775 per person per night, according to an official at the Department of Health and Human Services — far higher than the cost of keeping children with their parents in detention centers or holding them in more permanent buildings.
https://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/immigr...osam&stream=top

Grausamkeit.

Critics deplore this migrant shelter. Its operator just got a huge, hush-hush no-bid deal.
The Homestead shelter for unaccompanied migrant children has been shrouded in secrecy and cloaked in controversy from the moment it was reactivated in February 2018. Lawmakers scornful of President Trump’s immigration policies have been blocked from visiting. Because it sits on federal land, Florida’s child welfare agency is barred from investigating allegations of abuse.

Rather than close it, as activists have demanded, the feds just gave the operator, Comprehensive Health Services, a brand new contract — one worth $341 million.
There was no competitive bidding and it happened under the radar.

By the time the contract — the latest in a series of short-term deals — runs out in November, CHS will have earned more than half a billion dollars for housing migrant children, a figure that inflames critics while advocates say it is justified by an out-of-control influx on the southern border. The dollar total could rise still higher since the payment escalates if the number of youths increases, as is expected....

(John Kelly, ex-chief of staff for President Donald Trump, was spotted at the Homestead shelter for unaccompanied minors on April 4. Kelly sat on the board of DC Capital Partners, the company that runs the facility.)
